چکیده

Attention plays an important role in human processing of sensory information as a mean of focusing resources towards the most important inputs at the moment. In vision it has been argued attentional processes are crucial for dealing with the complexity of real world scenes. The problem has often been posed in terms of visual search tasks. It has been shown that both the use of prior task and context information top-down influences and favoring information that stands out clearly in the visual field bottom-up influences can make such tasks more efficient. In generic scene analysis one presumably has a combination of these influences. In this paper we describe a computational model that performs such a combination in a principled way. The system learns an optimal representation of the influences of task and context and thereby constructs a biased saliency map representing the top-down information. This map is combined with bottom-up saliency maps in a process progressing over time as a function over the input. The system is applied to search tasks in single images as well as in real scenes, in the latter case using an active vision system capable of gaze shifting. The proposed model has the desired qualities and goes beyond earlier proposed systems.

Event-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces

Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...

Top-Down Beta Enhances Bottom-Up Gamma

Several recent studies have demonstrated that the bottom-up signaling of a visual stimulus is subserved by interareal gamma-band synchronization, whereas top-down influences are mediated by alpha-beta band synchronization. These processes may implement top-down control of stimulus processing if top-down and bottom-up mediating rhythms are coupled via cross-frequency interaction. To test this po...

Combining bottom-up and top-down attentional influences

Visual attention to salient and relevant scene regions is crucial for an animal’s survival in the natural world. It is guided by a complex interplay of at least two factors – image-driven, bottom-up salience [1] and knowledge-driven, top-down guidance [2, 3]. For instance, a ripe red fruit among green leaves captures visual attention due to its bottom-up salience, while a non-salient camouflage...

Top-down directed attention to stimulus features and attentional allocation to bottom-up deviations.

One highly controversial issue with respect to visual selective attention concerns the degree to which the top-down attentional mechanism modulates attentional allocation to bottom-up deviation. We investigated whether top-down directed attention to a stimulus feature modulates attentional allocation to task-irrelevant, bottom-up deviation. The P3 event-related potential was measured as an elec...

The effect of bottom-up and top-down auditory program training on the development of children's auditory processing skills

Although there have been several previous investigations on the role of auditory training for the development of auditory processing skills, it still remains unknown whether children with auditory processing difficulties can get improved auditory skills after exposure to a multi-modal training experience comprising both visual and tactile stimuli. The present study, therefore, attempted to use ...
